Terrible Claw III: Kill 25 enemies of equal or higher level with an inactive pet (Lifetime). Inactive pets receive 200% of the effects of the Treat ability when used.

“Can go now,” I called back to Parker.

She gave me a look that her shared Wild Empathy came across as feigned disappointment. Couldn’t hide that she was impressed but had to acknowledge that I wasn’t honoring her orders.

Either way, we took to the forest quickly now that I’d had my parting shot at the mandrills.

Good work (praise, directed at the whole group), Parker said as we returned to the cover of the trees. They’ll (mandrills, hated foes) believe Colin (affectionate, beloved) is out here (near us, impostor). Now we bed down (hide, find security) until the mandrills (hated foes, numerous) calm down (drop their guard, become vulnerable).

We hadn’t gotten far before something changed in me.

I felt power surge through my limbs, making me stronger. I could move a little faster, my agility and wisdom stats increased. My mana started to refill at dramatically increased speed as On The Prowl came online. Wherever he was, Colin had just made me his active pet.

“One moment, Parker,” I said, predicting what was coming next. “A message from Colin.”

Hey buddy, Colin said within my mind. You guys doing okay?

Of course. Killed a bunch of mandrills. Stole some more silk. As expected. Things all right on your end?

The speech in my mind was different from hearing him talk normally. But because it came from within, from his own thoughts, it didn’t need the same tone indicators. I knew what he meant because it was his thoughts, not his words.

Better than expected, Colin said, though the tone was dripping with sarcasm. But you have danger coming your way.

“Danger incoming,” I warned Parker. I extrapolated from Colin’s thoughts within me. “Something unknown but expect it to be big.”

Thanks, sweet goop (term of endearment, deeply affectionate), Parker said, clearly addressing Colin through me by the pet name she often used. What’s the plan (next steps, preventative measures)?

Tell her there’s two options, Colin explained quickly. If you run away at high speed, you won't be there when J.J.'s toy shows up. Otherwise, be prepared to fight something so nasty that the mandrills sent it instead of ten thousand soldiers.

“Have to make ready for a nasty fight,” I conveyed to Parker. “Wants to suggest that we outrun it, but the level of threat he’s described makes me think that’s not possible.”

Good point, Colin admitted in my mind. Considering what’s at stake on J.J.’s end, if he doesn’t find us, he might find the nearest humans to force us on the defensive.

Too soon (anxious, fearful), Parker said immediately. My resources (cooldowns, attributes) are spent (against hated foe, recent fight). We need to stall (time, delay).

I can help (assist, shield), Wowser cut in. And if it gets to be too much (dangerous, fatal) Gothra can rescue (retreat, flight) me.

Keep me active, I instructed Colin through my mind. Need the stats and mana.

More than that, Colin agreed, if you’re active, you can share buffs with everyone.
